Texas Longhorns claim NCAA Golf Title

AwardTo some people, a beautiful sunny day and a round of golf sound just about perfect. Well, for the men of the Texas Longhorns, not only did they get that, but they also snatched the 2012 NCAA National Championship Title. This is only the third national golf title for Texas with the last win coming 40 years ago. With this win, the Longhorns now hold 46 NCAA National Championship team titles.

The final day started off sour when No. 1-seed Alabama claimed the first two matches. Toni Hakula held the lead after hole 16, but an eagle on 17 and a birdie on 18 by Alabama’s Bobby Wyatt turned it around. Julio Vegas’s day ended shortly after. Cody Gribble of Texas maintained a lead over Scott Strohmeyer their entire pairing and finished with a birdie on 17 while Jordan Spieth finished his pairing in dominating fashion. Dylan Frittelli of Texas and Cory Whitsett didn’t leave the decider without a bit of suspense. Whitsett tied the match with a birdie on 17, but on 18 wiffed his third shot to the green. That opportunity was all Frittelli needed to finish the day and finish off Alabama’s bid.

Congratulations Longhorns.
